Venezuelan La Guaira earthquake leaves families grieving and halts cross‑border romance

A powerful earthquake struck the coastal city of La Guaira, Venezuela, causing a building to collapse and resulting in multiple fatalities. Among those killed were the wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo, who was in Córdoba, Argentina, when the disaster occurred. The victims, identified as Yanina, Aaron and Ainhoa, were later confirmed dead by the local club Deportivo La Guaira.

Trejo posted a heartfelt tribute on social media a month after the bodies were recovered, describing his search through the rubble and expressing his reliance on faith during the tragedy. He thanked the volunteers who assisted him in the first 72 hours and vowed to continue the life project he had begun with his family.

The quake also disrupted a personal relationship between a Venezuelan woman and her American partner, effectively ending their romance as the disaster unfolded.
