Marcos Iriarte-Valdez charged with murder in Martinez stabbing

Marcos Iriarte-Valdez, a 36-year-old Venezuelan national, has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of 68-year-old Todd Stewart in Martinez, California. Prosecutors allege the killing occurred on August 6 during an attempted residential burglary. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the attack, which took place in the victim's front yard.

The incident has sparked intense scrutiny of California’s sanctuary policies. Federal officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) noted that Iriarte-Valdez was subject to an active immigration detainer placed in September. Despite this, a Contra Costa County Superior Court judge released him on his own recognizance just one day before the fatal encounter.

Iriarte-Valdez, who also holds Spanish citizenship, was already facing burglary charges and had allegedly violated home detention monitoring terms. Following his arrest during a SWAT operation, a judge denied him bail, citing him as a danger to public safety. If convicted of the murder charge and associated enhancements, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
