On 28 July 2024 Venezuela held a presidential election that the opposition says was won by Edmundo González Urrutia with more than 7.4 million votes, a margin of over four million ahead of Nicolás Maduro. The official electoral authority has not recognised these results.

Two years later opposition leaders—including María Corina Machado, Dinorah Figuera, members of the Unión y Cambio movement, the Plataforma Unitaria Democrática and the Vente Venezuela party—held rallies and issued statements reaffirming the claimed victory as a democratic mandate and demanding a transition, new elections, the release of political prisoners and a new National Electoral Council. They criticised the government’s handling of the June 24 2026 earthquakes, which killed more than 5,500 people.

The opposition also announced that a US‑backed dialogue between the official parliament and a delegation of opposition deputies will begin on 1 August, led by Dinorah Figuera and facing government figure Jorge Rodríguez. The dialogue is intended to discuss electoral reforms, a new CNE and judicial changes, while the opposition stresses that participation in the talks does not replace the demand for free elections.
