Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González urges reconstruction after deadly earthquakes

Opposition figure and former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia condemned the recent earthquakes that have killed nearly 3,000 people in Venezuela. He expressed condolences to families, praised the volunteer rescuers and international aid, and called for national unity in rebuilding the devastated communities.

González blamed the government for “prioritising other things” and said the lack of preventive measures and infrastructure worsened the disaster. He urged the authorities to ensure justice for victims, release political prisoners, and strengthen democratic institutions, urging that such a tragedy must not recur.

Residing in Spain, González highlighted the solidarity of foreign governments, humanitarian organisations, fire brigades and citizens, describing their assistance as an “invaluable gesture of friendship.” He called the quake a turning point for Venezuela, demanding a new, more just and resilient future.
