Venezuelan Professors' Federation Seeks Defensoría Intervention on Salary and Rights

The Federación de Asociaciones de Profesores Universitarios de Venezuela (FAPUV) formally petitioned the Defensoría del Pueblo on 4 August, requesting the office act as an intermediary to protect university professors’ human‑rights. The federation alleges a continuous violation of rights, describing the government’s policies as having destroyed salaries and social‑security benefits, resulting in a 95 % loss of purchasing power. It also criticises the minimum‑income bonus as covering less than a third of basic food costs and points to discriminatory practices that exclude three‑quarters of faculty and retirees from the professional‑responsibility bonus.

FAPUV also highlighted the severe impact of the double earthquake that struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, which it says wiped out families’ ability to meet any contingency due to loss of property. The organization demands sufficient remuneration for teaching work, the restoration of pension contributions, an effective and binding dialogue with the government, and comprehensive reparations for the alleged human‑rights violations and loss of assets.
