Venezuelan student released after school threats in Osorno, Chile

A 15‑year‑old Venezuelan student was detained after assaulting a classmate and threatening teachers and police at Liceo Rahue in Osorno, Chile. The teenager allegedly used a small screwdriver and later a larger tool to intimidate staff, claiming he kept weapons at home. Police intervened, and the student was arrested on charges of threats, assault and an attack on authority.

The Osorno Court of Guarantees rejected the prosecutor’s request for provisional detention and a ban on approaching the school, instead imposing lesser precautionary measures and setting a 60‑day period for the investigation. The school activated safety protocols, arranged psychosocial support for the involved students, and scheduled a meeting with parents on 11 August.

The case highlights concerns over school safety and the handling of violent incidents involving minors in Chile.
