Venezuela education sector faces crisis over safety and wages
Venezuela's upcoming 2026-2027 school year is marked by significant tension between the government and the Venezuelan Teachers Federation (FVM). Education Minister Héctor Rodríguez announced that classes will begin on September 14, with a goal to enroll 7 million students and open 5,000 new classrooms. To manage infrastructure damage caused by June 24 earthquakes, the government is implementing a rezonification plan, relocating approximately 86,000 students to safer facilities and utilizing double shifts.
However, the FVM has denounced the government's plan as irresponsible and illegal. The union argues that many schools lack essential services like water and electricity and have not undergone necessary technical safety inspections following the seismic activity. The FVM intends to begin work on September 16, citing legal protections for teacher rest periods. Additionally, educators have expressed outrage over a school start bonus of only 12.50 bolívares, which they claim is insufficient to cover basic costs. The crisis is further compounded by broader economic issues, including electricity shortages in regions like Monagas and the displacement of thousands of families from earthquake-affected areas like La Guaira.
