Venezuela's Delcy Rodríguez addresses UN and meets with Donald Trump
During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the international community to advocate for multilateralism, social justice in the Global South, and Venezuela's historical rights over Guayana Esequiba. Rodríguez stated that the nation seeks to exercise its sovereignty without external interference while remaining open to dialogue and cooperation.
A significant development noted was a meeting between Rodríguez and U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the first high-level formal contact between the two nations in over eleven years. The leaders discussed strengthening bilateral relations and advancing a cooperation agenda in strategic sectors, including energy, mining, and security.
Rodríguez also outlined a roadmap for an ordered and verifiable democratic transition, noting that the executive branch has established negotiation channels with various sectors of the Venezuelan opposition. Regarding energy, she highlighted a recent binational oil agreement that has eased financial restrictions on Venezuelan crude in exchange for certain sectoral controls, describing it as a vital factor for energy security in the Western Hemisphere.
