Venezuela’s El Ávila park deemed structurally sound after June earthquakes
The National Institute of Parks (Inparques) and the Venezuelan Society of Geologists evaluated the Waraira Repano National Park, better known as El Ávila, following the June 24 earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5. Their technical commission concluded that the tremors caused only superficial soil detachments, not structural damage or major collapses.
The main Cotiza‑Galipán road is cleared, but access to the high‑mountain sectors La Julia, Sabas Nieves 2 and Estribo Duarte remains closed as a precaution against aftershocks and observed cracks. In contrast, the routes through Galindo, Sabas Nieves 1 and the Chacaíto‑Papelón stretch are reported stable, operational and under continuous monitoring. Inparques emphasized that preventive restrictions will stay in place while rescue teams continue to assess affected housing in the nearby Manzanares area and monitor potential landslides during the rainy season.
