Venezuela's Fernando Albán case referred to Inter-American Court

The Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH) concluded that the Venezuelan state failed to investigate and punish those responsible for the death of opposition councilman Fernando Albán, who died while in the custody of the Servicio Bolivariano de Inteligencia Nacional (SEBIN) in October 2018. The commission classified the incident as an extrajudicial execution and highlighted it as part of a broader pattern of persecution and impunity, noting at least 18 similar deaths while under state custody.

The CIDH has now referred the case to the Inter‑American Court of Human Rights, which will assess Venezuela's international responsibility, determine appropriate reparations for Albán’s family, and issue guarantees to prevent recurrence. Albán’s widow, Meudy Osío, welcomed the decision, expressing hope for justice after years of impunity.
