Venezuela’s La Guaira earthquake relief sees volunteer challenges, US aid and firefighter honors
A double earthquake struck La Guaira, Venezuela on 24 June, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 and leaving more than 5,500 dead, at least 16,740 injured and roughly 18,000 homeless. The team worked seven days in Caraballeda alongside international crews, operating 12‑ to 16‑hour shifts and receiving tetanus vaccinations.
The United States responded through the NGO We Love Foundation, which channels official U.S. humanitarian assistance. Partnering with Global Empowerment Mission, the operation dispatched daily flights from Miami and later added two weekly flights plus maritime cargo, using two dedicated warehouses to deliver aid within 48 hours of packing.
In Mexico, the Universidad Nacional Experimental Politécnica “Antonio José de Sucre” (Unexpo) honored more than 20 members of its fire brigade for their voluntary assistance to the La Guaira communities, praising their professionalism and calling for permanent seismic‑education programs.
