Venezuela restores water, electricity and telecoms in La Guaira after deadly June earthquakes

On June 24, two successive earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela’s coastal state of La Guaira. Government figures put the death toll above 4,100 and injuries at roughly 16,700, with about 17,900 people left without homes and more than 800 buildings damaged, including 190 total collapses and severe damage to the Maiquetía International Airport.

Recovery efforts led by interim president Delcy Rodríguez show water supply has returned to 84 % of the population, while electricity service is back at 96 % thanks to the repair of 21 substations. Telecommunications are being rebuilt; the United States delivered over 1,600 Starlink satellite‑internet kits for rescue teams, health centres and security forces. Aid has arrived from more than 40 countries, and the United Nations is seeking roughly $300 million to support reconstruction. Rodríguez thanked Portugal for its diplomatic support and reiterated the government’s commitment to a comprehensive development project for the hardest‑hit areas.
