Venezuela deputy removed following dollarization proposal
Venezuelan lawmaker Antonio Ecarri has been removed from his position as president of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the United States following his promotion of a dollarization proposal. The National Assembly's decision follows efforts by Ecarri to collaborate with American economist Steve Hanke on a legislative project to replace the bolívar with the US dollar.
Steve Hanke, a Johns Hopkins professor known as ‘Doctor Money,’ has drafted a bill intended to stabilize the economy and combat hyperinflation. The proposal suggests that while the Central Bank of Venezuela would remain, it would lose its authority to execute discretionary monetary policies. Hanke maintains that the plan is compatible with the Venezuelan Constitution and estimates a 50% to 80% chance of approval.
Ecarri has defended his actions, stating he was elected to propose solutions to poverty and inflation rather than to simply follow party lines. Meanwhile, some economic analysts have questioned the viability of full dollarization under current conditions, citing factors such as labor law requirements and the country's dependence on oil revenue.
