The Venezuelan National Assembly is scheduled to hold an extraordinary session on Thursday, August 27, to begin the first discussion of a partial reform to the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ). This legislative move is a key component of political agreements reached on August 12 between the government and the 2015 National Assembly following a cycle of dialogue.

The reform aims to overhaul the judicial selection process. Key provisions include the renewal and expansion of the Judicial Nominations Committee and the creation of a new council to review the credentials and requirements of TSJ candidates. This new framework replaces a previous proposal from May that sought only to increase the number of magistrates from 20 to 32.

In addition to the judicial reform, the session will include a second discussion of the agreement to establish the International Alliance of Great Cats and the authorization of Ramón Antonio Gordils Montes as Venezuela’s ambassador to Egypt, Sudan, and the Arab League.
