Venezuela earthquake leaves $19.6 bn damage, over 5,300 dead and a massive rebuilding effort

On June 24 2026 a double earthquake of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 struck northern Venezuela, killing at least 5,398 people, injuring 16,740 and leaving roughly 18,000 homeless. The World Bank’s rapid damage assessment put direct physical losses at $19.6 billion, with total reconstruction costs potentially reaching $50 billion.

The Archdiocese of Caracas reported structural damage to 27 churches, classifying six as safe, sixteen with moderate damage and five with severe flaws. In La Guaira, the presidential habitability commission has inspected 6,907 buildings: 3,237 received a green (habitability) label, 1,785 yellow (restricted use) and 1,885 red (high risk). Engineers stress that red does not automatically mean demolition.

The government’s “Plan Venezuela Renace” aims to rebuild 11,794 homes nationwide, with an additional 25,000 anti‑seismic dwellings planned for La Guaira. Interim president Delcy Rodríguez pledged 4,000 new homes this year and 10,000 by 2027. Humanitarian agencies have distributed about 490 tonnes of food, medicine and other supplies, while the World Bank, IDB and CAF continue to coordinate technical and financial assistance for the recovery.
