Venezuela's Playa Grande demolition triggers protests and further damage

On July 31, 2026, Venezuelan authorities carried out a controlled implosion of tower C in the OPP‑36 Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi complex in the Playa Grande urbanization of Vargas state. The operation, ordered after the June 24 double earthquake left the building structurally unsafe, was executed by the Guardia Nacional Bolivariana and the army, which militarized access roads and established a security perimeter. Residents were not warned, leading to strong protests and a breach of the cordon by motorcyclists; traffic was only gradually restored after 17:15.

The blast caused collateral damage to the neighboring Los Dos Delfines building, destroying parts of its courts and parking area and raising fears that further demolitions could completely destroy the structure. Families of earthquake victims, still awaiting the recovery of bodies from the rubble, criticized the demolition as poorly planned and demanded a delay in future operations. Authorities said search and debris‑removal work would have to wait at least 24 hours for ground stabilization.
