Venice airport celebrates centenary of aviation history

The Venice airport, originally known as Giovanni Nicelli, is celebrating its centenary. The facility, which has been described by the BBC as one of the ten most beautiful airports in the world, marks 100 years since its first scheduled passenger flight on August 18, 1926.

Historically, the airport played a crucial role in connecting Italy to Central Europe, reducing travel time to Vienna from sixteen hours by train to just five hours by flight. The site was central to the vision of engineer Renato Morandi, who founded the airline Transadriatica. Morandi aimed to establish Venice as a hub for land-based aviation rather than seaplanes. His career ended tragically in 1930 when he was killed at the Rome Littorio airport while attempting to photograph aircraft during takeoff.
