Italy's Interior Minister Piantedosi readies police for new Val di Susa protests

On 29 July 2026 Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said authorities are preparing for possible new protests in the Val di Susa area. He announced that police forces will be deployed in large numbers and that territorial public‑security authorities have adopted measures that will frame the organization of services and impose bans in the vicinity of the protest zones.

Piantedosi stressed confidence that the situation can be kept under control and that any incidents will be brought to justice. He noted that earlier in the day some opposition figures claimed the measures restricted freedom of assembly, but later blamed the police for the incidents. He added that a large preventive action had limited damage and warned against any collusion between political actors and antagonistic groups. "Sulla Val di Susa ci stiamo organizzando con la consueta preparazione, professionalità e competenza delle forze dell'ordine," he said.
