Venice council proposes raising day‑tourist fee to €50 to curb overtourism

The city council of Venice is set to increase the daily entry fee for day‑tourists from the current €5 to €50. The proposal, backed by Mayor Simone Venturini, aims to limit the number of visitors on high‑traffic days and generate revenue for the city’s maintenance and preservation efforts. The fee, introduced two years ago as a tool to manage tourist numbers, currently applies on 60 days a year and exempts children under 14, local residents, and visitors with overnight accommodation. If approved, the steep hike would make spontaneous day trips significantly more expensive, reinforcing Venice’s strategy to control mass tourism and protect its historic infrastructure.
