Venice faces challenges from changing tourism patterns

Venice is facing significant shifts due to globalization and changes in tourism patterns. A growing number of visitors are day-trippers arriving via cruise ships or mainland hotels rather than staying overnight. This trend has reduced the profitability of local businesses, such as restaurants, which rely on evening customers.

To mitigate the effects of overtourism, the city has implemented a €5–10 "access fee" for day-trippers entering the historic center, though the effectiveness of this measure remains uncertain. While major thoroughfares and landmarks like St. Mark's Square experience heavy crowds during midday, the city remains more tranquil during early morning and late evening hours.
