Venice Film Festival 2024 Highlights Greece as Honored Country and Premieres

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs from 2 to 12 September in Venice, Italy. Greece is the honored country, featuring three Greek entries and extensive market activity.

Artistic director Alberto Barbera presented the official programme, noting the recent success of Christopher Nolan's "Odyssée" as evidence that cinema is thriving. The competition includes 20 films vying for the Golden Lion. Notable entries are Werner Herzog's drama "Bucking Fastard" about the real‑life twins Frieda and Greta Chapel, Kaisei Aflek's return with "Company", and Hirokazu Kore-eda's adaptation of the manga "Look Back".

Other premieres include Li Zhang‑dong's "Possible Love", Martin McDonagh's politically‑tinged black comedy "Wild Horse Nine" set before Chile's 1973 coup, Florian Zeller's relationship thriller "Bunker", and Lars Opheim's debut narrative "Primetime". The programme has drawn criticism for the limited number of women among the competing directors.
