Venice Film Festival showcases major Asian productions

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival has featured significant premieres from Asian cinema. The live-action adaptation of the manga ‘Look Back’, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, was selected for the main competition. Following its world premiere, the film received a standing ovation lasting over 12 minutes, with lead actors Natsuki Deguchi and Ayame Masuda expressing deep emotion at the reception.

Additionally, the action-suspense film ‘Arrested Memory’ (狂忘警探), directed by SABU and starring Ethan Juan and Gingle Wang, was selected for the official non-competitive feature film section. The film’s premiere was met with an eight-minute standing ovation. Lead actor Ethan Juan discussed the emotional depth of playing a character with memory loss, noting his personal connection to the theme through his late grandfather's experience.

‘Look Back’ is scheduled for release in Taiwan and Japan on September 11, while ‘Arrested Memory’ is expected to be released in March 2027.
