Venice Lagoon speed enforcement debate intensifies after fatal accident

Following a fatal boating accident involving Sean Michieli and Gabriella Querino, debate has intensified regarding the effectiveness of the Si. Sa. (Sistema Sanzionatorio) speed enforcement system in the Venice Lagoon.

Mayor Venturini has proposed extending the automated speed control system to external channels, including the route to Tessera airport, which currently falls outside the municipality's jurisdiction. While the Mayor has offered to make the system available to other authorities, such as the Lagoon Authority, local rowing and sailing groups are skeptical.

The group ‘Insieme contro il moto ondoso’, representing 42 Venetian rowing clubs and sports societies, argues that the system is currently ineffective at reducing wave motion. They cite municipal police data showing only approximately 500 violations over five months—averaging 3.31 sanctions per day across 50 active sections—as evidence that the current implementation is insufficient to manage the chaotic conditions in areas like the Giudecca Canal and San Marco Basin.
