Catanzaro Duomo restoration under investigation for alleged corruption
Authorities in Catanzaro are investigating alleged irregularities surrounding the restoration of the city's Duomo, which has been closed since 2018 following structural collapses. The investigation, led by the Guardia di Finanza under the coordination of prosecutor Domenico Assumma, focuses on potential corruption, exchange of professional roles, and falsification of public documents.
Stefania Argenti, the director of the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage, has received a notice of investigation. Investigators are examining allegations that Argenti exchanged professional assignments with a retired official, specifically involving roles related to the Duomo's construction management. The probe also includes suspicions of undue pressure on companies and potential manipulation of a public competition.
Law enforcement has conducted searches of the Superintendency offices and seized digital devices, including smartphones, to analyze communications and records. As of now, these remain allegations, and the presumption of innocence applies to all individuals involved.
