Venice tourist crowd detains pickpocket at Rialto Bridge, averting mob violence
In the busy Rialto area of Venice, a man suspected of pickpocketing a tourist's wallet was restrained by a group of visitors after the theft was reported. The scene attracted dozens of onlookers and threatened to turn into a lynching, prompting local councilor Monica Poli—known as “Lady Pickpocket”—to intervene, calm the crowd and call emergency services. Police arrived shortly thereafter, took the suspect, a Romanian citizen with prior offenses, into custody and began standard investigations. The stolen wallet was not recovered.
The incident highlights heightened tensions over petty crime in popular tourist spots and the role of community members in de‑escalating potential violence.
