Venice tourist crowd detains pickpocket at Rialto Bridge, averting mob violence

In the busy Rialto area of Venice, a man suspected of pickpocketing a tourist's wallet was restrained by a group of visitors after the theft was reported. The scene attracted dozens of onlookers and threatened to turn into a lynching, prompting local councilor Monica Poli—known as “Lady Pickpocket”—to intervene, calm the crowd and call emergency services. Police arrived shortly thereafter, took the suspect, a Romanian citizen with prior offenses, into custody and began standard investigations. The stolen wallet was not recovered.
