Venous insufficiency and leg circulation management

Red spots on the legs are often linked to venous insufficiency, a condition where blood struggles to return to the heart, causing it to stagnate in the lower limbs. This stagnation can lead to swelling in the ankles and calves, a heavy sensation in the legs, and skin discoloration. Initially appearing as red or purple spots, these marks can eventually turn brown due to pigment from escaping red blood cells, a condition known as ochre dermatitis.

To manage these symptoms, medical experts suggest regular movement to activate the calf muscle pump. Walking for at least twenty minutes a day and performing ankle movements while seated can help improve venous return.

However, certain symptoms require immediate medical attention. If one leg becomes suddenly swollen, painful, or warm, or if the redness does not fade under pressure and is accompanied by fever, a doctor should be consulted. Emergency services should be contacted if sudden shortness of breath or chest pain occurs.
