Danish farmers protest new nitrogen regulations
Danish farmers and industry representatives have launched widespread protests against proposed nitrogen regulation laws. Thousands gathered in Odense for a major meeting organized by Landbrug & Fødevarer to express concerns that the new rules will undermine food production, threaten rural livelihoods, and disrupt the existing Green Tripartite agreement.
Protests have included tractor demonstrations blocking motorways and streets in Copenhagen and Aarhus. Industry voices, including Mollerup Mølle, warn that the regulations could lead to significant production losses in grain, rapeseed, and legumes, potentially shifting Denmark from a net exporter to a net importer of crops.
In response to pressure, a parliamentary majority has reached a temporary agreement to exempt fruit and vegetable producers from the new nitrogen requirements for the year 2027. This exemption applies to a sector that accounts for 0.3 percent of total agricultural land. However, the broader nitrogen regulations are still set to apply to the agricultural sector as a whole starting in 2027, and the law is scheduled for a final vote in the Folketing this Thursday.
