Ventilation experts recommend placing fans by windows for effective cooling

Climatization specialists and architects agree that a fan does not lower air temperature but circulates it, so its placement determines cooling effectiveness. They advise positioning a fan near an open window or door to draw in cooler outdoor air or expel hot indoor air. The orientation should match the outside temperature: point the fan inward when the outside is cooler and outward when it is hotter.

The advice also incorporates the bioclimatic principle of cross‑ventilation, recommending two fans when possible—one to introduce fresh air on the cooler side of the house and another to extract warm air on the hotter side. This method works best at night or at dawn, or whenever the outdoor temperature falls below the indoor temperature. During peak heat, windows should remain closed to keep hot air out and the fan used when conditions improve.
