Ventotene Conference focuses on EU reform and democracy

The second Ventotene European Conference for Freedom and Democracy has commenced in Italy, running from September 10 to 13, 2026. The event was highlighted by the presentation of the President of the Republic's Medal, awarded by Sergio Mattarella to recognize those fighting for democracy and liberty worldwide.

European Parliament Vice President Pina Picierno emphasized the importance of strengthening the network of activists and announced the launch of the Freedom Academy. This new educational initiative for young Europeans focuses on European history, international affairs, the rule of law, and combating autocracy, involving organizations such as the Pietro Nenni Foundation and the Anti-Corruption Foundation.

During the conference, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani addressed participants via video link to discuss the future of the European Union. Tajani advocated for structural reforms to reduce bureaucracy and increase EU efficiency. He specifically called for moving away from the requirement of unanimous voting in the European Council to allow for faster decision-making on global challenges.

Additionally, Tajani identified the completion of the single energy market as a strategic priority to lower costs for citizens and businesses and to ensure more secure energy supplies across the continent.
