Ventspils coastline cleanup removes 20 tons of oil contamination

Cleanup operations to remove oil product contamination from the Ventspils coastline have been completed. The efforts covered approximately five kilometers of shoreline, spanning an area of about five hectares.

Authorities collected roughly 900 bags containing approximately 20 tons of contaminated material. The cleanup addressed two main sections: a 2.5-kilometer stretch of the central Ventspils city beach and another 2.5-kilometer stretch encompassing the Staldzenes and Pārventa coastlines.

With support from the State Fire and Rescue Service, collected materials from the city beach were consolidated for transport. Materials from the Staldzenes and Pārventa areas are being prepared near the Vitol Terminal Latvia for subsequent removal. The Ventspils Improvement Combine has begun transporting the waste, with portions already weighed in Riga. The collected material is scheduled to be handed over to the company Oil Recovery in Riga for final management and disposal.
