Venture capital hits record highs in 2026 driven by AI

Global venture funding has reached significant new heights in 2026, with total funding for the first three quarters reaching $679 billion. In Q3 2026 alone, global investment totaled $159 billion, a 53% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

A defining trend of the year is the surge in massive funding rounds. Q3 2026 saw a record 27 companies raise billion-dollar-plus rounds, accounting for approximately one-third of all global venture capital raised that quarter. Notable deals include $5 billion raises by Databricks and Safe Superintelligence, while several other firms, including Mistral AI and Moonshot AI, secured more than $3 billion.

Artificial intelligence continues to dominate the landscape, with roughly 86% of US venture dollars directed toward the sector. However, the market is experiencing a sharp divergence between massive late-stage successes and early-stage struggles. While capital is abundant for frontier labs, venture-backed startup shutdowns have reached record levels. Many of these closures involve companies founded between 2019 and 2021, which scaled aggressively during periods of low interest rates and are now struggling to adjust to higher costs and shifting market demands.
