Venus Shows Ongoing Tectonic Activity as New 3D Simulations Reveal Young Rift Valleys
Advanced three‑dimensional computer simulations created by researchers at ETH Zurich, led by Professor Taras Gerya with lead author Xi Yang, indicate that Venus’s crust is still dynamically active. The models reproduce the planet’s enormous rift valleys—some extending up to 10,000 km—and show that the rifts can widen at a rate of about 3 to 10 cm per year. Young rifts are bounded by high, steep flanks that gradually flatten as the crust relaxes after movement stops.
Radar images collected by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft in the early 1990s match the simulated structures, supporting the conclusion that parts of the rift system may be much younger than the previously assumed 100 million‑year age. The findings challenge the long‑standing view that Venus is geologically dead and suggest the possibility of ongoing volcanism and tectonic deformation.
The researchers note that the new insight could guide target selection for upcoming missions such as NASA’s and ESA’s planned Venus exploration programs, including the EnVision orbiter.
