Venus May Have Hosted Global Oceans, New Study Finds

Researchers published in *Earth & Planetary Science Letters* propose that Venus once possessed oceans covering roughly 90 % of its surface. The hypothesis draws on re‑analysis of 1990s Magellan radar data, which revealed polygonal fault patterns, large submarine‑like channels and ridged lowlands that the authors interpret as ancient marine sediments, seafloor muds and evaporite salt layers.

The study, led by geologist Richard Ghail of the University of London, argues that these features are analogous to terrestrial marine environments rather than purely volcanic formations. While the evidence is not conclusive and the idea remains contested, the authors note that upcoming missions such as ESA’s EnVision could provide decisive observations.
