Venus occulted by Moon during rare planetary alignment

Astronomers reported a rare alignment in which the growing Moon passed in front of Venus, an event visible to the naked eye on 17‑18 March. Brazilian astronomer Josina Nascimento of the Observatório Nacional highlighted the visual proximity of Venus, Jupiter and Mercury to the thin crescent Moon, calling the phenomenon exceptional because the planets appeared unusually close to the lunar limb. The observatory offered a live YouTube broadcast on 20 March for viewers in Brazil and elsewhere.

The same occultation was captured in daylight across other regions, including the U.S. state of Georgia, where images and timelapse footage were shared by media outlets such as FOX Weather and BBC Sky at Night Magazine. Global photographic records confirmed that the Venus‑Moon encounter was observable in multiple locations, underscoring the event’s worldwide interest among both professional and amateur sky‑watchers.
