Vera Politkovskaja discusses her mother's legacy and Russian censorship

At the Pordenonelegge literary event, Vera Politkovskaja discussed the legacy of her mother, the assassinated Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaja. In a dialogue moderated by MEP Pina Picierno, the conversation addressed the current state of press freedom and the political landscape in Russia.

Vera Politkovskaja noted that the independent journalism practiced by her mother would be impossible in modern Russia under Vladimir Putin. She highlighted how recent laws and the invasion of Ukraine have institutionalized censorship, forcing media to adhere to official government narratives. She emphasized that silence among the population does not necessarily equate to support for the regime, noting that many face arrest or exile for protesting.

The event took place in the ‘Arena del Dissenso’, a space established by Pordenonelegge to host intellectuals and journalists who have been silenced or forced into exile from their home countries.
