Veracruz construction worker volunteers to plant trees

Martín Carmona, a construction worker in Veracruz, Mexico, is using his personal time to participate in urban reforestation efforts. On August 9, Carmona joined a group of volunteers to plant 30 oak trees along the central median of kilometer 13.5 in the city's northern zone.

The initiative, led by citizen Alfredo Hernández, aims to mitigate the impact of rising temperatures and heatwaves in the rapidly expanding urban area. The group selected oak trees because, despite their slow growth, they are long-lived species capable of providing significant shade for decades.

Beyond temperature reduction, the reforestation project seeks to improve air quality in high-traffic areas, provide shade, and increase urban biodiversity. Carmona expressed that his motivation is to benefit future generations, noting that the trees being planted are intended for those who come after him.
