Veracruz deputy proposes sending local coffee to Mars

Victoria Gutiérrez Pérez, a local deputy for the Morena party in Veracruz, has renewed her controversial proposal regarding ‘Proyecto Ares,’ an initiative she claims aims to transport Veracruz coffee to Mars. During a press conference, Gutiérrez stated that the project involves space scientists from Veracruz working toward a mission to the red planet by 2027.

The deputy described the goal as a process of ‘terraforming’ to turn Mars into an agricultural oasis where the aroma of Veracruz coffee could reach the planet. She asserted that the project would grant Mexico ‘space sovereignty’ and claimed that the scientists involved already possess a spacecraft and missiles. She also expressed intentions to invite the media to visit a workshop where the technology is allegedly housed.

This is not the first time the legislator has made such claims. In September 2025, her statements regarding a built spacecraft sparked significant criticism and skepticism on social media due to a lack of public evidence. While ‘Proyecto Ares’ is a recognized initiative for aerospace exploration and theoretical research, reports indicate its actual nature differs from the spacecraft and mission capabilities described by the deputy.
