Veracruz discovery reveals ancient colonial stone foundations

Archaeological remains of an ancient construction have been uncovered in the center of Veracruz, Mexico. Near the intersection of Ocampo and 5 de Mayo streets, exposed 'piedra múcara' stone suggests the presence of foundations from the city's era as a walled fortification.

Researcher Ricardo Cañas noted that the area between Independencia and Madero streets, and Ocampo and Rayón streets, once housed 18th-century military barracks. The site is believed to be near the former Santa Bárbara bastion, one of the nine defensive structures that once surrounded the city. While the Santiago bastion remains a known tourist site, the Santa Bárbara bastion was smaller and lacked a watchtower.
