Veracruz drought threatens cempasúchil production for Day of the Dead
Drought and a lack of rainfall in the state of Veracruz are threatening the production of cempasúchil flowers, a key component for Day of the Dead celebrations. Producers in regions such as San Pablo Coapan, in the municipality of Naolinco, warn that low soil moisture levels risk the growth, size, and color of the flowers.
Under normal conditions, the harvest typically begins between October 25 and 27. To prevent total crop loss, small-scale farmers have been forced to implement irrigation systems using pumps or water trucks. These emergency measures, combined with the rising costs of fertilizers and agricultural inputs, have created unforeseen economic burdens for families who rely on this seasonal harvest.
Farmers are hoping for consistent rainfall in the central and High Mountains regions in the coming weeks to restore soil moisture and ensure a sufficient supply for local and regional markets.
