Mexico gears up for 2026‑2027 local elections with AI tools and new district council rules

The National Electoral Institute (INE) held a conference in Veracruz highlighting the use of artificial intelligence, digital voter cards, chatbots and a memorandum of understanding with Meta to modernize electoral processes ahead of the 2026‑2027 local elections. The institute stresses responsible AI deployment and the creation of digital tools such as the Certeza INE platform and the INÉS chatbot to serve citizens during voter registration, results reporting and candidate information.

State electoral authorities are aligning their own preparations. The Guanajuato Electoral Institute (IEEG) revised its call for district and municipal council members to comply with a court ruling, tightening documentation for indigenous self‑identification. In Hidalgo, the State Electoral Institute (IEEH) approved recruitment guidelines that broaden participation for indigenous peoples, youth, older adults and persons with disabilities, and translated materials into Tepehua, Otomí and Náhuatl. Both bodies coordinated with INE on the public service election contest. Meanwhile, the Servicio Profesional Electoral is conducting mandatory online training, exams and a recruitment campaign to refresh its staff ahead of the upcoming polls.
