Veracruz government negotiates to prevent San Pedro sugar mill closure

The Veracruz state government is negotiating with owners of the centennial San Pedro sugar mill in Lerdo de Tejada to prevent its permanent closure. Governor Rocío Nahle García announced that her administration, including the Secretariats of Finance and Agriculture, is developing a formal proposal to maintain operations and protect local employment.

The proposal is expected to be presented to company representatives next week, pending the return of the owner to the country. While Nahle declined to specify if the plan involves a financial rescue, she noted that the company has shown openness to dialogue.

The potential closure by Grupo Porres has created significant uncertainty for approximately seven thousand local cane producers. Following the situation at San Pedro, the number of operational sugar mills in Veracruz has been reduced to sixteen active plants.
