Veracruz Governor fights to prevent closure of Ingenio San Pedro

Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García is intervening to prevent the closure of the Ingenio San Pedro sugar mill in Lerdo de Tejada. The sudden decision by the plant's owners to cease operations has placed more than 5,000 families in the regions of Ángel R. Cabada, Saltabarranca, and Lerdo de Tejada at economic risk, threatening over 1,200 jobs.

Nahle criticized the company's lack of transparency and prior notice to the government, labeling the move as 'business irresponsibility.' She dismissed claims regarding a lack of local cane supply, asserting that sufficient raw material and workers are available. Instead, she attributed the crisis to administrative mismanagement and the irregular entry of imported sugar into the country.

The state government has established a working group with workers and producers to find a viable solution, which may include seeking new investors or requesting support from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Efforts are underway to maintain the regional productive chain and preserve the local economy.
