Veracruz government to assume control of Ingenio San Pedro

The Government of Veracruz will assume control of the Ingenio San Pedro sugar mill in Lerdo de Tejada to prevent its closure and ensure the upcoming December harvest. Governor Rocío Nahle García announced that a state organism will be created via a new decree, expected to be signed next week, to manage the facility's operations and maintenance.

Before the state takes over, the current private operator must settle all outstanding debts and finalize labor relations. This includes liquidating both unionized and temporary staff. Following these settlements, workers will be hired directly by the Veracruz government. To secure raw materials, the state's agricultural department will begin contracting sugarcane producers starting next Monday.

While the intervention aims to preserve jobs and productive capacity, some observers note that the state's takeover of struggling sugar mills is a recurring historical pattern in the region. The state government will also coordinate with the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Public Works to address the physical deterioration of the plant's facilities.
