Mexico announces major water infrastructure investment and avocado export rules

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced significant federal investments and regulatory measures in Mexico. The government is driving over 180 billion pesos in water infrastructure projects, including 80 billion pesos for 17 strategic projects and 20 billion pesos for the sanitation of the Atoyac, Lerma-Santiago, and Tula rivers. Conagua is managing 24,000 water and sewage works across 2,183 municipalities. Data from INEGI indicates that piped water access in homes rose from 77.6% to 82.4% between 2020 and 2025, benefiting approximately 7 million more people.

In the agricultural sector, Semarnat has prohibited the export of avocados grown in deforested areas to combat illegal logging and climate change. To support the industry, Sheinbaum signed agreements with the Association of Avocado Producers and Packers Exporters of Mexico (APEAM) to strengthen security, sanitation, and labor conditions for workers, ensuring the industry's continued stability and environmental traceability.
