Veracruz Governor proposes cell phone restrictions in schools

Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García has proposed new restrictions on the use of cell phones in basic education schools, specifically targeting primary and secondary levels. The administration is analyzing a plan to discourage both students and teachers from bringing mobile devices to campuses.

The proposal aims to distinguish between technology used as a learning tool and devices used for entertainment or non-academic activities. For high school students, the administration is considering a different approach that might allow the use of tablets, particularly within the telebachillerato system, pending a feasibility review of specific campuses.

This initiative aligns with national discussions led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo regarding mobile device regulation in public schools. In Veracruz, the matter has already reached the state Congress through proposals from local legislators. The restrictions are intended to reduce classroom distractions and address health concerns raised by specialists regarding prolonged screen exposure in children and adolescents.
