Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García Announces Puente del Sotavento Bridge and World Trade Center Expansion

Governor Rocío Nahle García announced that construction of the Puente del Sotavento bridge linking Boca del Río and Alvarado will begin this month. The project, named after the Sotavento wind, includes a roughly one‑kilometre boulevard on the Alvarado side and is being carried out by Grupo ICA with a two‑year timeline and investment scheduled for 2026‑2027.

In a separate statement, Nahle confirmed that the expansion and remodel of the World Trade Center Veracruz will start in August after the state signed a contract with the same construction firm. Weekly review panels will monitor progress, and local workers from a recently completed road project will be employed on both the bridge and the WTC works to sustain Veracruzian jobs and source materials locally. The expansion aims to boost the region’s business‑tourism capacity.

The governor also said she will meet this week with businessman Fidel Kuri Grajales to discuss the possible return of the Tiburones Rojos to professional football. If the club rejoins, Veracruz could have three professional teams—the Piratas, the Delfines of Coatzacoalcos, and the Tiburones—strengthening the state’s sporting profile. Additionally, officials clarified that recent heavy rains caused only a minor landslip at the Casas del Bienestar housing site, with no structural damage or injuries.
