Veracruz health authorities confirm first case of cyclosporiasis

The Veracruz Ministry of Health has confirmed the first case of cyclosporiasis in the state. The case was identified in a patient in the municipality of Coatzacoalcos who presented with intense diarrhea. The patient received timely medical treatment and is currently out of danger, showing a favorable evolution.

Health Secretary Mariela Hernández García stated that this is an isolated case and emphasized that there is currently no evidence of an outbreak or active transmission within Veracruz. Epidemiological surveillance remains active to detect any potential new cases. Authorities urged the public to avoid alarmist information and to maintain basic hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, consuming safe water, and properly disinfecting fruits and vegetables.

The confirmation follows a significant increase in cyclosporiasis cases in the United States. According to the CDC, between May 1 and August 3, 2026, over 10,000 cases were confirmed in the U.S., resulting in 517 hospitalizations and two deaths. Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal infection, primarily through the consumption of contaminated water or food.
