Firefighters in Mexico hold training congresses amid resource disparities

Firefighting departments in Mexico are holding commemorative events and training sessions, while experts highlight significant disparities in resources across the country.

In Veracruz, the III State Firefighters Congress concluded with the ‘Bombero Challenge’ competition. The event provided specialized training for approximately 231 emergency responders on topics such as structural fires, LP gas leaks, and victim care. The congress was organized by the Veracruz City Council and the Mexican Association of Fire Chiefs.

Simultaneously, in Ciudad Juárez, the local Fire Department celebrated its 108th anniversary with its own ‘Bombero Challenge’ at Parque Xtremo. The competition tested firefighters' physical strength and technical skills through obstacle courses and victim rescue simulations.

Amidst these celebrations, Alberto Hernández of the Mexican Association of Fire Chiefs warned of a national disparity in equipment and training. He noted that while border regions often possess better resources, smaller municipalities frequently operate with limited tools, such as using small water tanks to compensate for a lack of specialized fire trucks. He also identified lithium battery fires as a growing challenge for emergency protocols.
