Mexican pre-Hispanic artifacts featured in Shanghai exhibition

The international exhibition ‘Espacios Sagrados’ (Sacred Spaces) is currently held at the Shanghai Museum in China, showcasing a massive collection of 804 pre-Hispanic pieces. The exhibition aims to foster cultural exchange between the millennial histories of Mexico and China, highlighting the Olmec, Teotihuacan, Maya, and Mexica civilizations.

The collection is composed of 745 pieces from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) archives, 46 pieces from the Xalapa Museum of Anthropology (MAX), and 13 pieces from the Museo Amparo in Puebla. According to Joel Omar Vázquez Herrera, director general of INAH, the exhibition has seen significant success, recording over 300,000 visitors during the month of August alone.

This marks the sixth major Mexican exhibition sent to China. The display will remain open to the public until November 2027.
