Veracruz notary system faces calls for transparency and reform

In Veracruz, discussions are intensifying regarding the management and appointment of public notaries to ensure legal certainty and prevent discretionary power by government officials. There is a push to improve the notarial function by limiting the number of offices, preventing jurisdictional overreach, and ensuring transparency in the selection process.

Currently, Veracruz faces a situation with dozens of vacant notary positions, alongside others involved in legal disputes or competition procedures. Out of more than 300 total notary positions, approximately 280 are currently active. There are reports of a potential upcoming call for new applicants, which could serve as an administrative precedent. Some suggest increasing the number of notaries to promote excellence and efficiency, though others emphasize that any selection process must prioritize impartiality and transparency to restore social credibility in the profession.
